5/20/17 - Junior Wildland Firefighter Program

Junior-FirefighterMeet the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s fire crew and learn about their jobs and equipment. After this hands-on program, children will receive their very own Junior Wildland Firefighter activity book and patch.

This program will be held at the West Beach from 11am to 12pm.

5/20/17 - Stargazing

Stars at NightJoin fellow astronomy lovers and enjoy our night sky from one of the darkest spots in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Members from the Chicago Astronomical Society, Michiana Astronomical Society, and Calumet Astronomical Society with share their telescopes as they introduce the night skies to visitors from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the national lakeshore’s Kemil Beach parking lot. This is an outdoor program, so please dress for the weather.

A Stargazing Program is presented on the third Saturday of each month throughout the year. Times vary each month with the season.

The Kemil Beach parking lot is located one mile north of U.S. Highway 12 on East State Park Road (300E). 5/26/17 - Mount Baldy Sunset Hike (must pre-register)

Mount-Baldy-Guided-HikesMust pre-register to attend.

While Mount Baldy remains closed to unrestricted public access, you can join a ranger for a special guided hike along a trail on the western edge of the dune that has been found to be free of holes.

This program will begin at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center and you will follow the ranger to Mount Baldy. No exceptions.

*You must speak to a ranger to make a reservation by calling 219-395-1882.

The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is located at 1215 N. State Road 49 just south of the intersection of 49 and U.S. 20 in Porter, Indiana. 5/27/17 - Pinhook Bog Open House

Pinhook Bog Open House Indiana DunesYou can tour the bog on your own from 12:00 to 3:00 pm and you can talk to rangers stationed along the trail who will help you understand this unique place filled with carnivorous plants. Please arrive by 2:00 pm to allow about one hour to walk the trail and tour the bog.

5/28/17 - Bailly Cemetery Hike

Bailly Cemetery Indiana DunesMeet in the parking lot to enjoy a fun hike to the Bailly Cemetery every Sunday at 12:00 pm and then explore the interiors of both historic homes from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm (optional). Learn about early settlers and farmers who came to this region in the 1800s.

Cemetery Hike: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The Chellberg/Bailly parking lot is on Mineral Springs Road between U.S. 20 and Highway 12 in Porter, Indiana.
